Because of the different machines in the industry and their characteristics, we can not talk about a single universal valve design, but in valves we find numbers of valve types that correspond to nine different categories classified in: gate valves, Balloon valves, ball valves, throttle valves, tightening valves, diaphragm valves, male valves, check valves and, finally, relief valves. All these categories are part of the valvulería and depending on the characteristics of the industry, we will use one or the other. But let’s look more closely at the first three categories, analyzing their characteristics, advantages and disadvantages.
The gate valves are multi-turn, the inlet and outlet port is closed with a vertical flat face disc that slides at right angles to the valve seat. It is especially recommended for those ducts that have to be opened or closed completely without strangulation. They have a minimum resistance to the circulation of liquids or gases and are put in ducts of little use. It is used in oil and gas industry valves, gas, air, semi-liquid pastes or thick liquids, corrosive, non-condensable liquids and steam. Its closure is airtight and has a low cost, although it requires a lot of force to actuate it and must be covered or closed completely.
The balloon valves are multi-turn, wherein the closure is provided by a disk or plug which cuts off the passage of the fluid or gas in a seat which is usually located parallel to the conduit or pipe. It is applied in general valves for liquids, vapors, gases, corrosives and semi-liquid pastes. It is perfect for frequent use and allows precise control of the passage of liquids or gases. As a disadvantage we find that its cost is higher.
The male valves are quarter of a turn and control the circulation by means of a cylindrical or conical male. It is recommended to use in general industry valves, in packaging machinery for semi-liquid pastes, liquids, vapors, gases and corrosive products. This type of valves have a low cost and a high capacity, its closing is hermetic and its operation very fast.
